Aboriginals are jailed at a rate 14 times higher than the overall WA population. Worse still, it costs taxpayers – everyday Australians – $100,000 every year to keep a single criminal – of any colour – in prison. Add to this the fact 70% of Aboriginal criminals re-offend compared to 38% of the general prison population. Aboriginals boys have the highest recidivism rate, with 80% reoffending. And when each person reoffends, there goes another $100,000 every year. The over-representation of Aboriginals in the ‘justice’ system costs the WA government nearly $1 billion, according to the Law Reform Commission. This information was reported in the West Australian newspaper, page 15, November 26 2010.
